Here we find my Roadster.
It’s parked on a slope, facing downhill. You’d want to stop it rolling away then. Thing is, it has an automated manual gearbox, so no Park. Instead, the recommended procedure is to put it in reverse before stopping the engine (not after, because the gearbox doesn’t work without the ignition on) as reverse is the lowest gear available and thus the least likely to be able to turn the engine. So I did, and took my foot of the brake. Nothing happened for a moment and then the car succeeded in getting one cylinder past compression and moving downhill a little, whereupon it succeeded with the next one and moved a little more.
Moral of the story: put the handbrake on unless it’s a really gentle slope.

moral of the story... live in the north of the netherlands...we have no slopes :p
only reason i turn my wheels toward the curb is so bored schoolkids cant push me car halfway down the block.

I would think that's sound advice for any form of manual transmission. Or any really worn/beat up automatic.

You have to embrace what you have, I guess. I’ve lived in the Netherlands for 34 years, the last 16 of those in Groningen. When I first started driving in Germany, hill start wasn’t really something I had mastered. Why would I? The only inclines I used to encounter where onramps to highways, and those inclines were marginal at best .
Y et when I now drive through hilly or mountainous areas where some people drive very slowly I tend to get annoyed by those stupid Flachländer.

Inertia’s OK in this case. Momentum, that’s a problem.
